NIGHTFOLD / THIRD-PERSON MYSTERY 2026
After Haboku, I wanted the opposite: no combat, a realistic look, and a quiet story you walk through.
Nightfold is a short mystery in a Japanese mountain valley. Tetsu went up to a nearly empty village to film Fold Night, the one night the mountain women walk, and never came back down. You play his older brother, Eiji. To get him back, the valley’s debt has to be paid: three gifts left at the shrine on the peak, something grown, something kept, something taken. Then you walk Tetsu down, and you don’t look back.
The look is realistic: Megascans rocks and forests, the Kitbash3D Shogun kit for the village, MetaHumans for the people. The light follows the story, from afternoon to sunset to night for the climb.
Everything is built entirely in Blueprints in Unreal Engine 5.8.4. About 45 minutes to play, with keyboard and mouse or a gamepad.
Download the playable build.

SYSTEMS
Story & Quests
Three chapters, three gifts: a branch from the oldest cherry, the shrine’s bell lost in a pool, and Tetsu’s camera in the cave under the peak
A journal with the chapter list and the current objective
Tetsu’s notebook pages, left under stones where he planned each shot, tell his side of the story
Characters & Dialogue
Three villagers, Kiyo, Goro and Shin, whose lines change with the time of day and what you’ve done
Subtitles only, no voices. The mountain women never speak
Time of Day
Afternoon, sunset, night: the day moves on with the story, not with a clock, through a slow 60-second fade
Ambience follows: day, night, and the cave
Tools, not weapons
Kiyo’s kama cuts through the bamboo, Goro’s rope gets you down the gorge, Shin’s lamp shows Tetsu’s chalk marks in the cave
No combat: every item opens a path
The Walk Down
Tetsu follows you down the mountain unseen: you only hear his steps and his bell
Turn the camera back and he warns you. Look at him, and the mountain keeps him. Two endings
Save & Persistence
Autosave after every pickup, opened path and story beat, with Continue from the main menu
Everything you picked up or opened stays that way after a reload
Level Design
One valley: the village as a hub, the walled cherry grove on the west slope, the gorge and pool to the east, the cave and the summit shrine
The way up is through the mountain: an old pilgrims’ route, then a ledge winding inside the peak
UI & Presentation
The main menu sits over the live game world, with a slow camera drift at the village gate
Journal and inventory inspired by Black Myth: Wukong’s screens, set in Shippori Mincho
Two story cards after New Game, two cutscenes, and a credits roll
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
A.I. Gen Prompt : Design a title logo for a quiet Japanese folk-horror exploration game called NIGHTFOLD, spelled exactly N-I-G-H-T-F-O-L-D in capitals. Lettering: an elegant high-contrast Japanese Mincho serif (like Shippori Mincho Bold), wide letter spacing, off-white ink (#F2EFE8). Above the word, a minimal mark: a mountain peak drawn as a single sharp crease in a sheet of folded washi paper, with a thin crescent moon. A small square vermilion hanko seal reading 折目 at the end of the word. Subtle dry sumi-ink texture on the edges, not grungy. Flat 2D, no 3D, no glow, no bevel, no gradient, no scenery, no characters. Transparent background, centred, 2:1 landscape, high resolution.
Main menu. There’s no separate menu level: the menu sits over the live game world, with the camera drifting slowly past the village gate in the afternoon light.

From Above
The valley from above. The village is the hub: the road comes in from the south, Kiyo’s hut and the cherry grove lie to the west, the gorge and the pool to the east, and the only way up the peak is through the cave at its foot. Each gift moves the day on.
Afternoon: 1 The road in · 2 The village and the inn · 3 Kiyo’s hut · 4 The cherry grove
Sunset: 5 The gorge and the pool
Night: 6 The temple · 7 The cave · 8 The shrine on the peak
